Hiring a car abroad gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Whether you are planning a scenic road trip or just need a car of your own to make transportation more convenient, being prepared can save you time, money and stress. Here is what you need when hiring a car abroad:
Check Your Eligibility
Before planning on hiring a car, you should make sure you meet the basic requirements for hiring a car abroad first. This includes:
- Age requirements. Here is how old you need to be in some popular destinations:
- UK: 17
- France: 18
- Spain: 21
- Germany: 18
- Italy: 18
- Belgium: 19
- Ireland: 21
However, keep in mind these are only the legal limits. Car rental companies may have their own limits which could be between 21-25 years old. Drivers under 25 might be subject to a ‘young driver surcharge’ which is something to keep in mind.
- Driving experience. Some rental companies will require you to have a minimum number of years with a valid driving licence so this is also something you’ll need to check.
Documents You’ll Need
Make sure you have all the necessary documents ready to make the process seamless. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Valid Driving Licence: This must be valid and in date.
- International Driving Permit (IDP): Some countries may require you to have this in addition to your driving licence. An IDP acts as a translation of your domestic licence. You do not need an IDP to drive in the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Lichenstein if you have a photocard driving licence.
- To purchase an IDP, you should go to your local post office. They cost £5.50 and to buy one you must be over 18 years old and a UK resident.
- Passport: A secondary form of identification to your licence is usually necessary.
- Credit Card: Many companies will need you to have a credit card for payment and deposit. This is another stumbling block for young drivers.
- Driving Record: Although rare, some rental companies may ask to see your driving record. For this, you will need to get a DVLA code. The code is valid for 21 days.
Check Overseas Driving Rules
You should read our country-specific driving guides to familiarize yourself with local road regulations, including speed limits and specific equipment regulations. Please be aware that even if you are renting a car, the equipment in the car is your responsibility.
Some potential equipment you might need includes:
- Headlight converter stickers
- A UK sticker
- Emissions stickers for low-emission zones in certain European cities – check if your destination needs one before you leave
- Safety items like reflective jackets and warning triangles
Car Rental Excess Insurance
Whilst basic car insurance is usually included in the price of renting your car, it often comes with an optional addition that covers the excess you might have to pay if you damage the car.
Rental desk policies can be €25 per day, but a car rental excess insurance policy from us costs as little as €2.14 per day.
Tips for a Smooth Rental Experience
- Be on time for pick up: Rental companies often include a clause allowing them to give your car away if you are more than 59 minutes late without notice. If you are delayed then call ahead.
- Check mileage and return conditions: Understand any mileage restrictions and whether the car must be returned with a full tank.
- Inspect the car: Before setting off, check for existing damage and make sure it is documented.
